Port on Agistri Island 2015I took this picture on our walk back to the side of Agistri Island where the ferry would pick us up. I was staying in Athens for two weeks with two close friends in a loft off of Monastiraki Square. Those will probably always be two of the best weeks of my life. Anyway, this day, we'd taken a ferry from Piraeus, basically the port of Athens, to Agistri. The island's name in Greek means "fishing hook" and is so named for its resemblance to one.There are several islands off the coast of mainland Greece that are close enough for day trips, and Agistri is one of the closest. My favorite things about it are how pedestrian friendly it was, the prices, the calmness of the water, the ease of getting to it, and the hospitality of the locals, despite our presence there on a weekday approaching off season. We were only there for one day, and mostly walked around, swam, sunbathed, and had lunch, so I can't speak on other activities there, but all of the beach bars and restaurants we saw were preparing for events, so I think it's safe to say it stays lively there as long as the weather permits. We were there in September and it was still a really nice temperature, with some breezes. One day we got rained out of all our plans, but that was in Athens. Agistri was still but sunny. I loved this day.Greece is great for tourists and a lot of travel staples have been streamlined. You can buy ferry tickets here and pick them up at the port office before your ferry leaves. Give yourself time to walk a bit. You should always give yourself a cushion but I mostly say this because we missed our ferry while running to it because we didn't know how to navigate the port. When we arrived we just walked down the main road until we got tired, because it was beautiful. There are plenty of places along the way, and the island also has hotels with beautiful views if you wanted more than a day of this adorable, quiet charm. It was so peaceful here! I miss Greece, and I miss Agistri. Say hello to the ferry captain for us if you go.
